After a backup
Who pays after a Seattle sewer backup
A backup in Seattle can be on your side sewer or on the City main. The owner line decides who pays for the work.
What you own
If you own your home or building, you own your side sewer to the public sewer main. (Seattle Public Utilities)
What to do first
- Call a plumber to find where the blockage is. (Seattle Public Utilities)
- If the contractor thinks the mainline or the connection is the problem, call SPU at (206) 386-1800. (Seattle Public Utilities)
When the City may pay
- SPU repairs the public sewer mainline when it is damaged or blocked, and it repairs the City's part of the sewer connection when that part has failed. (Seattle Public Utilities)
- If the backup was caused by an SPU sewer issue, you can file a claim with the City for reimbursement of your costs. (Seattle Public Utilities)
Questions for the plumber
- Is the blockage on my side sewer or on the City main?
- Will you put the finding in writing before any dig?
- If it looks like a City problem, will you stay on site while I call SPU?
